How to enjoy a guilt-free holiday
Summer is upon us once again and it’s likely that many of you will be taking a holiday for a week or two. Whether it’s at home in the UK or overseas, the chances are that you’ll be relaxing and having a good time, which will inevitably mean loosening up on your regular diet and exercise routine. In turn this could lead to you worrying about weight gain.
However, providing you lead a healthy lifestyle throughout the rest of the year, one or two weeks of relaxing won’t hurt you at all. I always say that it’s not what you eat between Christmas and New Year that does the damage, but what you eat between New Year and Christmas. The same thing applies with holidays.
There are a few simple rules to bear in mind while you are on holiday:
1) Always eat breakfast as soon as you get up. Then try to eat every couple of hours to keep your energy up and your blood sugar stable.
2) Incorporate protein into every meal
3) Drink plenty of water – especially if you are somewhere hot.
You may be pleased to know that you might even find it easier to lose weight while you’re away, simply because you’re in a better state of mind. Away from the pressures of everyday life – work, home and your hectic schedule – you are more relaxed. Also, the sun does wonders for your mood which means that you’re less prone to eating out of boredom and because you have to bare all you are generally more conscious about what you’re eating.
When you’re at home in your usual routine you are more stressed which is a huge contributor to weight gain, you work long hours and the weather is normally dull, so it stands to reason that a holiday is good for you.
So eat, drink and have a great time on your holiday without feeling guilty if you over-indulge. You will come back feeling so much better for it and can return to your healthy lifestyle when you get home.

Q&A - Sam, answers our members most pressing questions...
One of the most common questions I get asked by clients is why do you we recommend taking Fish oils, Multivitamins and Food Enzyme as their daily essential supplement and why do we recommend Nature's Sunshine products over any other brands?
Answer:
Reason #1: Insufficient nutrients in our food: We can't get all the essential nutrients we need from food alone. Of course, nature intended our food supply to provide us with the nutrients we need - and those nutrients would have been sufficient in our food of 100 years ago. But our food today is highly processed, genetically modified and prepared in a way that often destroys much of the nutritional content. According to Dr. Rakowski, "Our farm industry's fertilizers often contain only nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium which have lead our soils to be 73% less nutritious. So what happens is this malnutrition in the soil becomes malnutrition in the plants, becomes malnutrition in the animals and becomes malnutrition in humans." This then leads us on to our next point 'Processed and Refined Foods'.
Reason #2: Processed And Refined Foods: When you cook food improperly, such as by using a microwave, you risk reducing its nutritional value. Also, many foods that are used in fast-food restaurants are processed. For example, the processing that converts brown rice into white rice reduces the fibre content by about 75 percent and also reduces nutrients such as iron, niacin, thiamin, folacin, potassium and vitamins E and B6.
This is why it is very important to have the finest multivitamin (Super Supplemental Vits and Mins) which is made with nature ingredients and does not contain any artificial colours, sweeteners or additives like your typical high street multivitamin.
Reason #3: Poor digestion. If our digestive systems functioned optimally, we wouldn't need as many high-quality nutrients in supplement form - but that is not the case. It is estimated that one half of the UK population produces insufficient stomach acid, which diminishes the ability to absorb nutrients from food and can increase inflammation, stomach bacteria and numerous other health issues such as bloating, stomach pain and even depression. ‘Why is it harder to lose fat around the stomach area than anywhere else as I seem to lose it everywhere apart from my stomach?’
I got asked a very unique question by a client and that was ‘Why is it harder to lose fat around the stomach area than anywhere else as I seem to lose it everywhere apart from my stomach?’
Answer:
What do we actually mean when we talk about ‘burning’ bodyfat? We mean that the fat stored in the fat cell is removed and ‘burned’ as energy. Most tissue in the body can use fat for the fuel, but the main one for our purpose is muscle tissue.
The 3 major steps of fat metabolism are mobilisation, transport and oxidation? (Burning).
Mobilisation:
Body fat is essentially stored triglyceride with a small amount of water. Mobilising fat requires that we first break down the triglyceride into free fatty acids. The single step that limits how quickly or slowly fat is mobilised is the activity of an enzyme called Hormone Sensitive Lipase or HSL.
The only hormones to effect the HSL activity is Insulin and Catecholamines
Insulin is the main inactivator of HSL and it only takes small amounts to have a detrimental effect.
The main activators of HSL are Catecholamines. They have their own specific receptor called adrenoreceptors. There are two major adrenreceptors beta and alpha, which are found all over the body. The main receptors in the fat cells are alpha 2 receptors and beta 1-2 receptors both of which actively bind to catecholamines.
When catechomlines bind to beta receptors they increase fat break down. However when they bind to alpha receptors fat break down decreases.
It’s important to realise that insulin pretty much wins the battle over fat cell metabolism. Regardless of catecholamine levels if insulin is elevated, fat mobilisation with be impaired.
Transport:
Once we break down the stored body fat into free fatty acids which enter the blood stream. Since the free fatty acids can’t be burned in the blood stream, it has to be transported away from the fat cell; depending on the blood flow from to and from the cell.
Fat deposits also differ in term of blood flow. Visceral fat for example has an extremely high blood flow and is therefore mobilised fairly easily and generally is reduced the fastest (especially with exercise) Abdominal fat has less blood flow and is sensitive to the catecholamines, (not as many beta receptors as other areas of the body) and more sensitive to insulin. This makes it more stubborn than visceral fat.
So poor blood flow, high insulin sensitivity levels, lower beta receptor around stubborn fat is why it is difficult to get lean.
How do we improve this?
The real world message is that we want higher blood flow, low insulin levels and high beta catecholamine levels. These can easily be achieved by altering eating habits (lowering carbohydrates) which decrease insulin levels and exercise (which with the right program increase catecholamines and blood flow)
Oxidation
Eventually the FFA (free fatty acid) will run into a tissue (e.g. muscle) which can use it for fuel. To be used, the FFA has to be transported into the mitochondria by carntine. When glycogen is high, carntine activity is low and fat burning is low, and vice versa. By depleting muscle glycogen, we can increase carntine activity, allowing us to burn of the fat faster rate.
As you can see – we ramp up fat metabolism very effectively with a combination of lowered carbohydrates and intensive exercise.

How much water do we need and why do we need it?

Well... here is the answer in our health tip of the week
The body is made up of 60% water in adult males and about 55% in adult females.
Water is an important catalyst for weight loss because proper hydration is essential for fats burning, maintenance of muscle mass, and boosting overall metabolism. If you're dehydrated even to a slight degree, your cortisol levels will rise and your metabolic rate will drop.
Also if you dehydrate a muscle by as little as 3 percent, for example you will lose 10 percent of its strength and 8 percent of its speed. Overall a loss of 1-2 percent of water can decrease whole body entire performance by 10 percent.
Recent research says that you need to drink at least a litre of water per 50lbs of body weight to keep hydrated.
If you are currently not drinking enough, start to create habit so that you will eventually research your optimal levels of water.
